Summer Running Goals

Hello everyone. Happy Friday!!

I have been sliiiiightly MIA for a few weeks now. Either I am too busy or having too much fun to blog, or I am struggling with eating and really don’t feel like blogging. Please forgive me!

A week ago I was on a Disney Caribbean cruise! My sister has all the pictures- but I will share some when I get my hands on them. Smile It was amazing, to say the least.

GUYS AUGUST FIRST AHH COLLEGE APPS AHHHHH

Pushing that out of my mind, today I completed my last running goal for the summer!
I wanted to

1. Run under 25 minutes for a 3 mile time trial

2. Complete the 9 mile loop at the local forest preserve (I actually wrote down 10 miles, I thought it was a ten mile loop!)

The first goal I actually completed on the cruise! Weird, right?? I tried to keep up with running by doing laps on the track on the boat, which worked pretty well. I ran with a cute guy a few days too which didn’t hurt Winking smile

There was a 5k on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island (!!) one morning, so of course I signed up!
It wasn’t too hot, but it was kind of humid, and as soon as the clock started, it POURED. The kind of rain where you can barely see in front of you and your shoes go Squish Squish with every step.

That was a MEMORABLE experience. I was running by myself, and I wanted to PR, since my 5k record was like 26 minutes or something.  I had kind of given up with the rain, but I tried to push through it! I guess I did because I ended with a time of 24:45! Not too shabby considering the rain and all. I’m really hoping that without the extra .1 I will be able to run under 24 for a 3 mile time trial in 2 weeks Smile

So today I completed the second goal! The 9 mile loop!

We added a mile at the end, because, well, when you are thaaaaaaaaaaaat close to double digits….

Before & After 10 mile pictures! Our first time!! Smile

We went out to breakfast afterwards. I mean running ten miles deserves a good breakfast. I got lemon raspberry crepes. MMMMMM.

Crepes may be my favorite restaurant breakfast food.

Anyways, I’ve got a lot to do today! A long night at work and volunteering and running errands and starting college stuff (EVERYTHING STARTS TODAY!)

Gotta run! <— not literally. I already did that Winking smile

Longest distance you have ever run?

What were your summer goals?

Pancakes, waffles, crepes, or french toast????

April Goals

Hello everyone. I’ve been kind of nonexistent in the blog world. I’ve just had a lot going on in life! I’m not sure I’m in too great of a place right now, and I need to figure a few things out.

Let’s look at what I wanted to do in March.

1. Break 7:30 in the mile.

2. Actually go to a Yoga class

3. Focus on loving myself. This means less calorie counting, more acceptance, making sleep a higher priority, and practicing yoga!

1. & 2. were checked off my list. I talked about them in my last post! Smile

but 3? Oh 3. Not so much. I was doing really well at the point I got that mile time earlier in March. But somehow things took a turn for the worst.

In April, my goal is simply to love myself. I have other things I want too, like keeping up my 4.0 and breaking 6:45 in the mile, etc, but I know that right now I just need to focus on me.

To me, that means the same as it did earlier: but a big emphasis on the food part. I need to get to an okay place with food, and stress less.

Other random news?

I visited St. Louis over break!

I went to SLU and didn’t care for it, and then I visited Truman State and LOVED IT (even though I would need to be much much faster to run on their team). They have an awesome Communication Sciences & Disorders department with a brand new clinic and a therapy dog!! Smile Later I visited Augustana and didn’t care for it. I think every Junior in America went on college visits over break, haha Smile

I sprained my toe. Yeah, it’s as stupid as it sounds. A 10 pound weight fell on my toe and… yeah. No running until Tuesday for me.

Picture of my socked feet because toes are ugly & gross.

I was SO lucky and I won Sunnie’s giveaway. Check out these GORGEOUS hoop earrings!!! I’m in love!! Thank you SO SO SO much Sunnie!!

I may have gotten a job at a new Frozen Yogurt place opening near my house. I got the callback interview and it went pretty well.. I think! I should get a call this weekend. Honestly the idea of a job really stresses me out but this would be the perfect job for me so I’m hoping for the best!!

Aaaand I already miss running. I’m just glad it’s only four days.

P.S. I am secretly in love with this tattoo I saw on Instagram the other day.

What are your April goals? How did you find a healthy balance with food and weight?

Have you ever been to Saint Louis? What were the deciding factors during your college search- or are you searching like I am?

What was your first job?

Do you want/have any tattoos?

Fabulous Friday

Happy Friday!!! We did it weekendspringhappiness WHEE!

As far as running, the last two weeks have been life changing.

I am starting to really get faster. I’m becoming the strong runner I’ve always dreamed of being. I am so happy and so proud.

Fabulous is…. Breaking that goal. Last Wednesday I had my meet. THAT meet. My secret goal was to break 7:00. I was afraid to type it because I didn’t know I could do it. But I figured out what each of my laps had to be, and gave the times to a lovely teammate who told me when I was ahead, on track, and when I needed to pick it up. My coach was well aware of my goal and definitely said the right things at the right time.

Capture

I did it. My first official mile. 6:53.3.

I almost cried as soon as I finished. Partly because I wanted to throw up, but partly because I was proud. I had pushed myself more than I ever have before, physically and mentally. All my efforts thus far paid off. And you know what? That was my FIRST (official track) mile time. I’m only going to get better from there.

P.S. I was last in my race, yet I think I was the happiest at the finish line. Everyone has their own goals and dreams.

Fabulous is….a few pretty freaking awesome long runs. Last Saturday we did 5 miles, pretty fast (under 10:00 pace) and it was sunny and GORGEOUS. The varsity and frosh/soph girls were at a meet, so it was just the JV team and the slower underclassmen, but it was amazing and we got Panera afterwards. Smile

Not my picture, but I got the breakfast power bowl. It was delicious!

Fabulous is…. Butt-Kicking workouts- that actually went really well. Recently we did 1,000 repeats, 200 repeats, and a tempo run. I love 200m repeats because I was the fastest in my little group of runners. It was nice to be leading the pack instead of being the end! I like to switch things up Winking smile

Fabulous is…. being named Athlete of the Week!! It’s just the 2nd week that they’ve named an athlete and I seriously almost cried when they named ME!! I know I’m not the fastest but I can’t believe they notice how hard I’ve worked and I guess I’ve been a positive influence on the team and stuff. Look, I got a sparkly poster!!! Star

Fabulous is…. IMAGINE DRAGONS CONCERT. nuff said.

Fabulous is…. my new & improved GPA. I retook a math class after freshmen year (I was 2 years ahead and shouldn’t have been!) and my counselor just told me that they could drop the credit. Goodbye unweighted C!! Now my cumulative is 4.0. That just sounds a million times better than 3.85, even though it’s a pretty small difference. I just have one more quarter left before I apply to colleges- scary!- so that will really help me out.

Fabulous is… YOGA CLASS! I finally (and I mean FINALLY) checked off that goal to attend a Yoga class. I got 15 classes for 50 dollars at the local studio my friend loves. Thank you, Groupon! Normally the classes are 10 dollars. I tried my first one on Sunday. Man, it was tough. My legs were shaking so much!! It was 75 minutes long and it was pretty vigorous. I loved it though. The room was hot, the teacher (a guy) was so accepting and helpful and positive, and I left the studio feeling accomplished and happy. I loved it and I’ll be going back.  I think Andrew is going to be the best boyfriend ever and come with me this week!

This is in the yoga studio Smile

Fabulous is… Spring. Happy Spring!! Red rose Maybe it’ll be warm now. Yesterday morning it snowed. My mom said “Maybe mother nature is going through menopause, but like backwards, with cold flashes instead of hot flashes.”

Hehe. Today is warm though and I am going to run in shorts and it is going to be the best thing ever.

What fabulosity did YOUR week consist of? Smile

Did you celebrate the first day of spring?

Smashed any goals recently?

Are you going to see Divergent when it comes out? (I hope I am!!)

Have a WONDERFUL WEEKEND-

March 2014

Hello and happy almost Friday!! Smile I hope you are having a fabulous week.

I don’t know about you, but for me February FLEW by. March totally snuck up on me, so this post is definitely late, but better late than never right? Winking smile

Let’s recap last month. These were my goals.

1. Break 8:00 in the mile. I only have one time recorded for the mile- and it was a downhill mile right after cross country season. I got 6:57 in that. I really think I can break 8:00 on the track, as long as I keep doing the workouts and putting my all into practice every day.

The time trial ended up being 3/4 of a mile. I have yet to run a timed mile in track. Wowza. How did that happen?? I have a 400 time, an 800 time and a 3200 time but no 1600….. Hopefully my coach puts me in the mile soon. I need a time!!

2. Take a yoga class.

I didn’t do this. I had leadership training for the Snowball event all of February so I couldn’t make it to the class. Also, my sister has confirmation on Wednesdays, when the class I want to take happens, so it’s pretty hard to coordinate me going. Sad smile But essentially these are just excuses. I DID continue to practice yoga at home through videos, but I didn’t end up taking any classes last month.

3. Practice oboe for at least a half hour 3 times a week.

Sadly, this one was a no-go. I’m ashamed that I didn’t make the time and my audition showed it- it went very badly. 2nd round auditions are coming up, so I have a chance to do better this next time.

Overall I’m pretty disappointed in my Feb. goals. I accomplished a lot in Feb., including good grades and running things and more freedom from ED and becoming a better person and a stronger leader through the Snowball program I led. I think these things got in the way of my “Official” goals, and I think that’s okay! Buuuut I still plan to do a little better in March. Smile

My goals for March:

1. Break 7:30 in the mile. I broke 8:00 in the 2 mile… I’m secretly hoping to break 7 though!! Hopefully I run a mile race soon. Smile

picture of my feet because why not.

2. Actually go to that Yoga class…. Finally!! Or any other yoga class. No excuses this time.

P.S. I am totally crushing on Liz’s yoga pictures on instagram. @carpediemandrun

3. Focus on loving myself. This means less calorie counting, more acceptance, making sleep a higher priority, and practicing yoga!

Cheesy awkward selfie. oh jeez.

What are your goals for this month?

Hello February!

Happy February, bloggers. I can’t believe the first month of 2014 is over already.

Today I’m looking back on what I accomplished in January. My goals were…

1. End 1st Semester with a 4.0 or higher.

Check! Smile I ended up with a 4.0 exactly. I was at an 89% in Spanish, so I was SO close to a 4.15! I’m so proud of the hard work I put in through finals. It all paid off!

2. Complete the 21 Day Yoga Challenge like Jessica and Leigha.

Check! I LOVED this challenge. It really helped me manage my stress and become more comfortable with my body. Sounds cheesy but it’s true! There were only two days I didn’t do yoga, and I was able to “make up” the video later on. I definitely want to continue doing yoga! I think I will do a combination of videos on my own at home as well as trying out a class or two.

3. Work with my RD, not against her, to find a healthier balance with food. It’s a new year and I want to be “okay” with food so that I can be a great runner and function as well as my body possibly can.

Check? This goal was much more difficult for me. There was nothing measure-able about this goal. However, I have gradually upped my calories. I’m eating at least 300 a day more than the maximum I would eat a month ago. I think I’m feeling better about food but it’s hard to say. My nutritionist hasn’t been a lot of help the past two appointments. She just told me to “eat more” yesterday. That is way, way too vague for me. I asked for more clarification and she just said to increase my carbs and protein at every meal and add more fats. She gave me examples for the fats I should be adding but I don’t think that helps much. I still have no clue how many calories my body needs, and eating without tracking anything doesn’t work for me (I become too paranoid that I’m eating too much and start restricting.) I think I have made significant improvement over the past month- my body does feel better- but I still have a ways left to go.

I must say, January was a success. I am very proud of the work I did in January!

Now it’s time for February.

1. Break 8:00 in the mile. I only have one time recorded for the mile- and it was a downhill mile right after cross country season. I got 6:57 in that. I really think I can break 8:00 on the track, as long as I keep doing the workouts and putting my all into practice every day. It was hard for me to set a track time goal because I don’t have any “starting” times! We do a time trial for the mile this Friday, so I may have to reevaluate this goal then. Smile

2. Take a yoga class. Christina and I keep saying how we need to try a yoga class, but this month I am actually going to (finally) DO IT! Just one yoga class may seem like it’s not even a goal, but if you see how busy my February is, you would understand. Winking smile Track meets will be starting very soon, plus I am taking an ACT, plus I was chosen as a leader for a retreat so I have TONS of planning to do, plus I have auditions for next year’s band!

Which leads me to my final goal…

3. Practice oboe for at least a half hour 3 times a week. Auditions are in February and March and I want to be 100% prepared. I’m (potentially) the first oboe in our school for next year. I need to start acting like it with my practice schedule!

P.S. I love this quote.

These goals aren’t as big as my January goals, but I wanted to make them attainable and fun. Like I said, I am super-duper busy this month and I don’t want my goals to bring me too much unnecessary stress.

What are your goals for this month?

Snowpocalypse 2014 & January Goals

Sooooo winter break just got extended two days due to CRAZY snow and temps WAYY below zero. Everyone is celebrating by sleeping in and wearing pajamas all day, myself included. I hope everyone is staying safe!!

I’m kind of freaking out because we are supposed to have finals (mid-terms for some classes) Wednesday-Friday next week. I’m also supposed to have two tests Wednesday, that I realllly hope are canceled since I was counting on the review time in class.. Disappointed smile

Anyway. I’ve had a pretty lazy weekend so I’m feeling kind of antsy. The weather doesn’t exactly allow for a run, and my mom’s at work so I have no car (or gym membership) so I added in some Blogilates. I figured out how to pick youtube videos from my phone and have them play on the TV. Preeeeettty snazzy.

I organized my drawers. I had found this on Pinterest and had to try it. It worked!! It literally doubled my space. Open-mouthed smile

Used to be two drawers!!

I’ve been trying so hard to finish my AP Language essay on The Crucible. I officially hate The Crucible. I don’t have 4 pages worth of words to talk about that book. I’ll finish it eventually. I hope. Oops.

As the first Monday of the year, I decided to set some goals. I’m setting Monthly goals, not a yearly resolution. That’s way too overwhelming. I’ll pick three things to work on each month.

January Goals:

1. End 1st Semester with a 4.0 or higher. This would make me feel so accomplished. I need to study a lot Spanish and Math to achieve this.

2. Complete the 21 Day Yoga Challenge like Jessica and Leigha. These ladies inspired me! This is a great, healthy way to challenge myself and I am looking forward to stepping outside my comfort zone.

3. Work with my RD, not against her, to find a healthier balance with food. I gathered the courage to email her, and she emailed me back saying we will work together so that I can have a better relationship with food. I’ll be seeing her every 2 weeks. She wants to share everything I shared with her with my parents, which I am really scared of, so I think I’ll ask if she can tell them some things and not everything. It’s a new year and I want to be “okay” with food so that I can be a great runner and function as well as my body possibly can.

Thanks again for encouraging me to reach out to her. I love you all!

That’s all for now. Hope everyone is enjoying their extended break (if you have one!) or that you are staying safe & warm!!

How are you spending your Snowpocalypse time? What are your 2014 Goals/ Resolutions?

Just dropping in

Happy Tuesday everyone! What a busy couple of days…

On Father’s Day I went out to dinner with my sister, Dad, and his side of the family.
My hair looked good for the first time in my life so I took a few selfies. Okay the collage makes me look conceited. Somehow when I signed onto blogger this picture was under “my phone pictures”. I never made a collage. Magic? Yes.
Yay for wearing makeup and anything besides running shorts! (;
Yesterday I had my first day of SUMMER RUNNING with the cross country girls!!
The first page of workouts…
I had a blast. Everyone is so nice, and there is even another Type 1 diabetic! (: I am not the slowest one there, so my fears were irrational. There is a group of “beginning runners” who run a pace that is perfect for me. I love having others to motivate me on a run! The run seems so short when running with so many girls.
In addition to a run, we have been doing speedwork (sprints) and Core work and Leg work. It’s HARD! The front of my right leg hurts a lot. Crossing my fingers I’m not getting shin splints.
I only got 2 days of camp because tomorrow at 3:30AM I head to the airport. Bahamas, here I come!
This means I will have to say goodbye for a few days 😦 I’m not going to have a computer, and, well, I just want to enjoy my vacation and not even think about blogging.
I will, however, be on instagram! (: Follow my new BLOG account, @emilysmilesformiles
As far as running, since I have the workout schedule, I want to stay as on-top-of-it as I possibly can! I’m really hoping there is a safe path that I can run on by my hotel. The gym I would have access to costs $15 for a day pass, or $50 for a week. That’s a lot of money to pay to run!
My question is… Should I bring my garmin? Without it, I will have no idea how far I’ve run, but I also don’t want to lose it. Comment and tell me what you think. (:
I’ve got a TON of packing to do! Check back in a week for my vacation recap. Till then, find me on Instagram (:
~Emily
Do you take selfies when you get dressed up, or is that just me? (;
Do you bring your GPS watch on vacations? What is your instagram username?
